Maghera Women's XI vs Strabane Women's XI - Division 2
Wednesday 17/6/26 - The Rainey
Strabane came out firing, racing to 17 in the opening over, but Maghera quickly responded. With just eight balls gone, a sharp piece of fielding produced a run out after a powerful drive was stopped at mid-on. Sarah Marshall then struck in her next over with a well-earned LBW, before Alana Menary took a fine catch off Kirsty Stevenson's bowling to dismiss Strabane’s top run scorer. Despite the early pressure, Maghera had removed three key wickets with just 30 runs on the board after three overs.
Strabane rebuilt briefly before Kirsty made the breakthrough again with a superb inswinging delivery to bowl another batter. The score moved to 44-4 after 5.4 overs. Philippa McClay then made an immediate impact, striking with her very first ball to hit middle stump, reducing Strabane to 55-5 after 8.1 overs. From there, Maghera bowled with greater control, although extras and no-balls helped the scoring rate tick over. Strabane closed their innings on 100-8 from 20 overs.
Kirsty returned impressive figures of 2-21 from her four overs, while Philippa also finished with 2 wickets from her spell, and Lorraine bowled economically.

In reply, Maghera’s innings began steadily with Zoe Crooks and Sarah Marshall taking the score close to 20 in the opening five overs. However, Sarah was dismissed shortly after, followed quickly by Rebecca Logan and Carol Andrews, leaving Maghera 20-3 after six overs.
A difficult spell followed as Strabane’s bowling attack applied consistent pressure, and wickets continued to fall, including a hat-trick from the Strabane captain. At 32-6 after 10 overs, Maghera were left with a steep chase.
Despite the scoreboard pressure, Maghera continued to battle, showing determination against a disciplined and experienced Strabane side. The innings eventually closed in the 19th over for 59 runs.
While the result didn’t go Maghera’s way, there were clear positives to take, particularly the disciplined bowling response after a rapid start from Strabane, and valuable experience gained against a well-drilled opposition.
Focus now shifts to next week’s home fixture against Bready 2nd XI, where
Maghera will look to build on the lessons learned.
