Double Delight as Maghera Secure Impressive Wins Over Drummond and Killyclooney

It was a hugely positive weekend for Maghera Cricket Club’s senior sides, with both the 1st XI and 2nd XI recording excellent victories. The two teams produced impressive displays of resilience, discipline and teamwork, with strong performances across both batting and bowling departments highlighting the depth and determination within the club.
Maghera 1st XI vs Drummond 1st XI - League 1
Saturday 18/7/26 - Limavady
Maghera 1st XI produced an excellent all-round performance to secure a well-earned victory over Drummond, showing great character with both bat and ball to defend a competitive total.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Maghera found themselves under early pressure at 13/2. A crucial partnership between Anu Sanjeewa and Trevor Dougherty then steadied the innings, helping to rebuild the total and provide some much-needed stability. Anu’s innings came to an end with the score on 48 following an outstanding one-handed catch at long-on. Trevor continued to anchor the innings with a valuable contribution of 35, with Scott Dougherty adding an important 29 to help keep the scoreboard moving.
With the score at 109/7, Maghera were in danger of falling short of a competitive total, but the lower order showed excellent composure and determination. Kenny Irvine added an important 22, Caleb Caskey contributed 18, Luke Simpson remained unbeaten on 15, and Alfie Stewart chipped in with 8, as Maghera battled their way to a competitive total of 176.
The fight shown throughout the innings was a testament to the team’s character, with every contribution proving valuable in building a defendable score.
In reply, Drummond started strongly, reaching 38 before Maghera made the breakthrough. From that point onwards, the Drummond innings was kept under constant pressure as wickets fell at regular intervals thanks to an excellent bowling display.
Denton Cant led the attack with figures of 3/30, while Alfie Stewart continued his excellent day with 3/36 and Surya Amaravadi produced a superb spell of 4/13 to help wrap up the Drummond innings. The bowling effort was well supported in the field, with some excellent catching, including three sharp catches from Denton in the mid-on and mid-off positions.
It was a deserved and much-needed performance from Maghera, who showed resilience with the bat and discipline with the ball to overcome a strong Drummond side and secure an important victory.

Maghera 2nd XI vs Killyclooney 3rd XI - League 4

Maghera 2nd XI produced a superb all-round performance to secure a comprehensive victory over Killyclooney, with an excellent display of discipline, intensity and teamwork from the very first ball.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Maghera’s attack delivered exactly the performance required, applying pressure from the outset and forcing Killyclooney to work hard for every run. Graeme Stevenson set the tone with an outstanding opening spell, consistently hitting his areas and conceding just four runs from his six overs while also claiming an important wicket.
Charlie Mainwaring then produced a match-changing spell, taking four wickets to break the Killyclooney innings apart, while Glenn Baird and Philip McClay continued the excellent work by maintaining the pressure and helping to close out the innings. The bowling effort was backed up by sharp fielding throughout, with every player contributing to a disciplined team performance.
Set a target of 58, Maghera’s reply was confident and controlled. Benji Cathcart and Swethankh Shanmughan attacked from the outset, punishing any loose deliveries and keeping the run rate moving at a rapid pace. The pair brought up 50 in just 6.3 overs before completing the chase in 7.1 overs without losing a wicket.
A dominant 10-wicket victory built on excellent bowling, disciplined fielding and confident batting. It was a complete team performance and a deserved reward for the effort and commitment shown by the squad.
