Maghera 1st & 2nd XI – Mixed fortunes as 2nds seal thriller and 1sts fall just short

It was a weekend of contrasting outcomes for Maghera’s senior men’s sides, as the 2nd XI produced a memorable home victory over unbeaten Erne 1st XI, holding their nerve in a tense final over finish at the Rainey. The 1st XI, meanwhile, pushed Bready 2nd XI all the way in a competitive chase, but were ultimately edged out in a high-scoring encounter despite a strong opening partnership and encouraging all-round passages of play.

Both fixtures reflected strong individual contributions and periods of control across the squads, with the 2nds taking a standout win against top-of-the-table opposition, while the 1sts were left to reflect on fine margins in a game that remained in contention deep into the final overs.

Maghera 1st XI vs Bready 2nd XI - League 1

Saturday 13/6/26 - Bready

Maghera 1st XI came up just short in a competitive away fixture at Bready, despite a dominant opening partnership and a disciplined bowling effort that kept the hosts within a reachable total throughout.

Bready were asked to bat first and posted 251–7 from their 40 overs. Maghera’s bowlers remained consistent and well-disciplined throughout, generally preventing the home side from fully accelerating beyond a par score. While a couple of chances in the field went unclaimed, the overall effort in the field ensured Bready were continually required to work for their runs. A notable highlight was a composed century from Bready youngster McClay, who anchored the innings superbly for the hosts with an impressive and mature knock.

In reply, Maghera made an outstanding start as Aaron Stewart and Anu Sanjeewa produced a commanding opening partnership of 131, putting the chase firmly on track. Anu was eventually dismissed for a well-constructed 67 in the 19th over, with Aaron following a couple of overs later for 39 after a strong and steady innings at the top of the order.

From there, Maghera were unable to fully sustain the early momentum, with the middle order finding scoring increasingly difficult against disciplined bowling and mounting dot-ball pressure. Maghera captain Scott Dougherty played a valuable and composed knock of 50, working hard to stabilise the innings and keep Maghera in the contest, but the required rate gradually edged away despite the resistance. Maghera were ultimately bowled out, falling 22 runs short of the target.

While the result went in Bready’s favour, the performance contained several positives, particularly the opening partnership and periods of control with the ball, alongside clear lessons to take forward in the middle overs.

Maghera 2nd XI vs Erne CCC 1st XI - League 4

Saturday 13/6/26 - The Rainey

Maghera 2nd XI produced a standout performance to secure a hard-fought 4-wicket victory over previously unbeaten Erne 1st XI, successfully chasing 179 in a tense finish at the Rainey.

After being asked to bowl, Maghera set the tone immediately with a disciplined new-ball spell from Glenn Baird and Graeme Stevenson. Both bowled with accuracy and control, asking constant questions of the Erne top order and making early inroads by removing both openers to leave the visitors under pressure at 13–2.

John Andrews followed with an excellent spell of sustained pressure, consistently hitting strong areas and further restricting scoring opportunities, even if the breakthrough wicket narrowly eluded him. In the middle overs, Charlie Mainwaring made the decisive impact, breaking the innings open with a well-executed spell that yielded four wickets, including the key dismissal of Aswin for 66, just as he looked set to anchor the innings through to a bigger total.

As Erne looked to accelerate late on, Caleb Caskey delivered a particularly impressive spell of control, conceding just 11 runs from three overs and helping to prevent any late surge. Maghera’s combined effort in the field ensured Erne were restricted to 178–9 from their overs.

In reply, Maghera made a commanding start as Muhammad Zeeshan continued his excellent form with a composed and fluent 80 from 75 deliveries. He was well supported by Sean Bentley, who played a vital and steady role in a 124-run opening partnership that placed Maghera firmly in control of the chase.

However, Erne fought back strongly in the middle and late stages, taking wickets and steadily increasing the pressure as the required rate climbed. With the game finely balanced, Maghera needed 6 runs from the final over. Under significant pressure, Abhimanyu Thayakkattil and Graeme Stevenson showed composure to keep the innings together, and with 3 required off the final ball, they ran a calm and decisive three to seal victory at 179–6.

A disciplined bowling display and a composed, high-pressure finish with the bat secured an impressive win against strong opposition
