Next up in the Captain Previews are Maghera’s 1st XI. The 2024 season saw a significant upturn in fortunes for the side, bolstered by a plethora of new arrivals, improved training (thanks to new player/coach Benji Cathcart) and match preparation, Maghera’s 1st XI secured a strong 4th-place finish in NWCU League 2 and featured heavily in the individual run-scoring and wicket-taking charts. This marked a vast improvement on the 2023 campaign, where we narrowly avoided relegation.

With momentum building toward the end of last season, the 1st XI now have their sights set even higher in 2025.
MCC stalwart Alfie Stewart was re-elected as captain ahead of the 2025 season, and here’s what he had to say about the upcoming campaign:
"As the 2025 season approaches, we at Maghera Cricket Club eagerly anticipate another season of milestones and memories."

With the continued growth of the club and its membership, we are now proud to be launching a third team, set to compete in its inaugural season – a testament to the passion and progress seen throughout the club.
Exciting times also lie ahead for our ladies’ and youth development sections, both of which continue to flourish thanks to the tireless efforts behind the scenes and in the coaching department.
New faces are always a real boost to any club, and we are truly grateful to those who have recently joined our community or reached out to get involved in our great game. Each one has received the unique Maghera welcome – a promise we extend to anyone in the district who fancies trying cricket for the first time or reigniting an old passion for the sport.
Feel free to come down and support our teams at our home ground, Rainey Endowed School, whose unwavering support has been a cornerstone of our growth over the years.
All that remains is for the sun to shine, old friendships to be renewed on the field, and for us to chase further success at this young but passionate cricket club.

Maghera 1st XI begin their 2025 campaign on Saturday 26th April, taking on Eglinton 2nds at Rainey Endowed School. Please come down and show your support!
